Holland imparted this age-old truism last July to a ballroom packed with about 200 TV critics. "The problem with Niagara Falls is that the good view of the Falls is from Canada," Holland says with a shrug. Shooting exterior scenes, however, means a day trip to Niagara Falls, Ont., even though the show is set across the border on the U.S. It is a copy of the Toronto pool hall, the Academy of Spherical Arts, right down to the post-and-beam construction, gentleman's club vibe and orange-felt Brunswick tables. One of the biggest sets is a bar called The Barrel.
Wonderfalls was filmed in a Toronto warehouse. Holland describes this ambiguity as a "delicious imbalance" that the series will thrive on.
Does that make me an insane person?" she asks. "She has a weird way of doing it, but I talk to myself sometimes. Is it God? Is it Satan? Is it indigestion?" says director and executive producer Holland.ĭhavernas doesn't think Jaye is losing it, believing instead that her character talks back to toys as she tries to figure out what life is truly about. What caught the fancy of jaded TV critics is that you never know who is calling the shots with Jaye. Wonderfalls generated the most buzz at a press preview. In a season where more than one new American TV series played with themes of divine-like intervention on Earth, Series creator Bryan Fuller says Jaye's negativity is "a really interesting way to cut saccharine with a little bit of meanness and have a good time." She does so reluctantly, and only after the lion threatens to embarrass her. The trinket coerces her into helping a rude customer she encountered earlier that day. In the first episode, it's a misshapen, plastic orange lion stamped with "Souvenir of Niagara Falls" that starts making demands. The animals are a menagerie of inanimate objects that speak to her. It's the animals that make her care," Dhavernas says. "Jaye doesn't really care about anything. She is snarky with the customers, barely tolerates her boss, but is upset when her mouth-breathing co-worker gets the assistant-manager promotion. She is terminally bored, unsure what to do with her life and not exactly a people person. Jaye works at a souvenir shop in Niagara Falls, N.Y.

Jaye revels in the high-brow/low-brow combination, plus it puts a lot of distance between her and her family of wealthy overachievers. She is one of the few French-Canadian actors to successfully work outside the province.ĭhavernas makes her big entrance playing Jaye Tyler, a recent philosophy graduate from an Ivy League college who chooses to live in a trailer park. Also employed at The Barrell is bartender Eric Gotts ( Tyron Leitso ), who manages to appeal to Jaye's somewhat prickly soft side.Wonderfalls premieres on Friday night, the 25-year-old star of Quebec film and television will be making her big American breakthrough. The two have been friends since grade school, and Mahandra works at Jaye's watering-hole-of-choice, The Barrell. Mahandra McGinty ( Tracie Thoms ) is Jaye's best friend. Jaye's family and her interactions with them make up a fair amount of the show's plot. Their mother is Karen ( Diana Scarwid ), a successful best-selling author and father isĭarrin ( William Sadler ), a well-known and highly-respected surgeon. Jaye has an older sister, Sharon ( Katie Finneran ), who is a successful and ambitious immigration attorney, and an older brother Aaron ( Lee Pace ), who is working on a PhD in Comparative Religion. Jaye's goal in life of maintaining a detatched disdainfulness from the world is threatened when these muses begin to deliver her with various ultimata. Jaye's mundane and predictable life takes a turn for the extraordinary when she begins to be visited by various "muses," which take the form of everyday objects with animal faces.
She spends a large chunk of time avoiding her loving, albeit overbearing, parents, and she does this by hanging out at a local bar, The Barrell. Jaye lives in a trailer park in Niagra Falls, where she works part-time at Wonderfalls, a local gift emporium. Caroline Dhavernas stars as Jaye Tyler, a 24 year-old recent graduate of Brown University.
